ESI – A Review (all modules)

The ESI Review outline:

  • Describe the history and evolution of triage and ESI 5 level system.
  • Review the application and functionality of applying ESI levels.
  • Apply ESI acuity levels to a variety of adult and pediatric patient scenarios using the ESI decision algorithm.

This course may be used as a refresher course for those who apply the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) algorithm, based on the the following premises:

  • Emergency department acuity decision-making should not be separated from its purposes
  • Immediate recognition of high acuity patients
  • Streaming (segmentation to specific locations) of all arriving patients
  • ESI should be taught in conjunction with an ED’s patient flow design and not in isolation.
  • ESI is a tool for a purpose larger than itself.
