jody crane headshotJoseph T. Crane, MD, MBA  Dr. Crane is a practicing, board-certified Emergency Physician. He lectures internationally on a variety of topics in Emergency Medicine and Lean Healthcare, and is considered one of the leading experts in Emergency Department Operations in the U.S.

Dr. Crane began his career in Emergency Medicine in Fredericksburg, Virginia at Mary Washington Healthcare in 2000. There he served as Director of Operations for his Emergency Medicine physician group from 2004 to 2009, leading a number of innovative changes in his ED. He later served as Senior Medical Director for Stafford Hospital and served on the Mary Washington Healthcare Board of Trustees from 2011-2013. In 2012, Dr Crane was recruited to work for The Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group as Associate Regional Medical Director with oversight of Acute Care Services, Telemedicine, Innovation, and Medicare/Medicaid for Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland.

In addition to his local efforts, Dr. Crane graduated from the Physician Executive MBA Program (PEMBA) at the University of Tennessee in 2004, where he is currently an Adjunct Professor teaching physician-led operations improvement. His work there focuses on innovative approaches to ED and hospital-wide operational and patient flow improvement, specifically addressing the application of lean manufacturing concepts within the healthcare environment. He also specializes in leadership and change management for operational and clinical improvement. Dr. Crane is also an Emergency Medicine faculty member of The Institute for Healthcare Improvement and serves as an advisor to NHS National Institute for Health Research.

Dr. Crane has worked with hundreds of emergency departments from around the world on adopting innovations in the delivery of emergency care. He has taught and worked in a wide variety of settings in the US, Canada, Europe, South America, and the Middle East, including courses or sessions at The University of Tennessee, The University of Kansas, George Mason University, Harvard University, and Cambridge University.

Noon, PhD  Professor Noon is head of the department of Business Analytics & Statistics at the University of Tennessee.  He is a founding member of the highly-ranked Physician Executive MBA program and continues to teach in the program.  Dr. Noon also teaches in the department’s Masters and PhD programs, and in a number of executive education programs including the longstanding “Lean for Healthcare” offered by the University of Tennessee.  His teaching interests include operational improvement, business modeling, simulation, and decision analysis & support.  He holds a PhD in Industrial & Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan.  His published research concerns computer-based modeling and process improvement.  He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and serves as a teaching mentor for junior faculty.  He is a founding partner and co-director of X32 Healthcare which provides education and consulting services to healthcare systems on process improvement, patient flow, capacity planning, and staff scheduling. He is a co-author (with Dr. Crane) of “The Definitive Guide to Emergency Department Operational Improvement” (Productivity Press).
